There’s something about a St. Barts sunset that stops conversations mid-sentence. The sky shifts from blue to orange to deep purple while the Caribbean reflects every shade back at you. But not all sunset spots are created equal. After countless evenings on the island, we’ve gathered our favorites, from easy-access beach bars to hidden coves worth the hike.
Shell Beach: the classic choice
Just a 5-10 minute walk from Gustavia’s harbor (depending on your starting point), Shell Beach faces southwest, positioning it perfectly for sunset viewing. The tiny crushed shells that give this beach its name catch the fading light beautifully, creating an almost pink glow on the sand.
Shellona restaurant, a Greek establishment with Mediterranean influences, sits right on the beach, offering authentic Hellenic cuisine alongside what many consider the island’s best sunset cocktails. Grab a daybed, order a cocktail, and watch as silhouettes of anchored yachts drift across the horizon. The combination of accessibility and atmosphere makes this a reliable choice, particularly for first-time visitors.
Colombier Beach: worth every step
For those willing to work a bit harder, Colombier rewards generously. Accessible only by a 20-45 minute hike from Flamands (depending on fitness level and route choice) or by boat, this secluded beach offers an undisturbed view that feels earned. The hiking trail from Flamands passes through dramatic coastal scenery, and timing your arrival about an hour before sunset allows for a quick snorkel in the calm northwestern cove before the main show.
The cliffs surrounding Colombier seem to catch fire as the sun descends, and with minimal light pollution, the transition into starlight happens naturally. Pack a picnic from La Petite Colombe bakery and linger. This spot attracts couples and solitude-seekers rather than crowds.

Gustavia Harbor: sunset with a view of the yachts
The harbor transforms during golden hour. From the waterfront restaurants lining the quay, you can watch the sky burst into colors while mega-yachts reflect the changing light. Bonito restaurant, perched on a hill overlooking the harbor, combines French Pan-American cuisine with panoramic views that seem designed for lingering over a glass of rosé.
For a different perspective, walk up to Fort Karl. This 18th-century Swedish fortification (built in 1789) on a small hill has been restored by the Nature Reserve, and the path leading to its top offers impressive views of Shell Beach and Gustavia’s rooftops catching the last light. The fort was strategically built to protect Gustavia’s harbor and was named after Karl XIII, brother of Swedish King Gustav III.
Gouverneur and Saline: peaceful alternatives
Gouverneur Beach, tucked between rocky cliffs on the island’s southern coast, provides a more intimate setting. The beach has no bars or restaurants nearby, meaning fewer people and more peace. As the sun sets, sky and ocean seem to merge in quiet harmony.
Saline Beach offers similar tranquility. The walk over dunes adds to the sense of discovery, and by late afternoon, the beach often empties out. Bring water since no facilities exist here, and settle in for an uninterrupted view that captures the raw beauty of the island.
Hotel Le Toiny’s hilltop terrace: a refined experience
Hotel Le Toiny’s hilltop terrace deserves mention for those seeking a more refined experience. Located at Anse de Toiny, their restaurant offers elegant dining while the view sweeps from the surrounding cove to distant neighboring islands. The atmosphere here feels serene and special, ideal for celebrating an occasion or simply treating yourself to an unforgettable sunset experience.
